Improvements to Hawthorne Avenue

The City of Salem contracted us for a $4.8 million street widening and improvement project at Hawthorne Avenue NE and Hyacinth Street NE. As their Oregon heavy highway contractor, the two-year, 5,350 LF, project includes improvements to curbs, sidewalks, asphalt pavement, storm sewer, retaining walls, traffic signals, interconnect, illumination, striping and landscaping.

First phase completion date is the fall of 2012 during which time, we will also construct the North Gate park detention pond and parking lot, install a 10x7 ft. natural bottom box culvert and a new pedestrian bridge.

Second phase is due for completion in the winter of 2013 and will require our heavy highway contractor services for a three-sided 16x18 ft. bridge, another natural bottom box culvert (10x6 ft.), bio-swale construction and detention pond construction.

Challenges

The area of safety—and ensuring that we have multiple traffic control plans in place—has brought us the most challenges. Safety for those who live in the area and those who use the thoroughfares as their transportation route are our top priority. So in addition to traffic controls, we have implemented pedestrian walkways and methods for bypassing active waterways to install new culverts and bridges.

Outcome

Even in its infancy, this improvement project is off to a great start. Good momentum and good teamwork between us and our subcontractors is making everyone feel comfortable with the task ahead and meeting the completion date.
